Brand-related/supported shorts can vary in content and quality - some being no more than an extended commercial masquerading as a mini-movie and some, as is the case with this peculiar number from Superprime/Merman director Yorgos Lanthimos, being more festival fodder than revenue generator.
Based on an idea from Droga5 CCO David Kolbusz and produced through Rekorder Berlin, NIMIC is a gorgeously shot, fantastically surreal 12-minute short in which Oscar-nominated actor Matt Dillon and Daphne Patakia (Winner of the EFP’s Rising Star in 2016) weave a merry dance through a circular narrative about identity and relationships. To say any more would be to give away the film's enjoyably compelling narrative, but suffice to say it's not your normal 'boy meets girl' story.
“I was glad to be given the opportunity to work on a shorter format that can be sometimes challenging but quite rewarding," said Lanthimos about the process. "We developed a script starting from a very intriguing initial idea and concept, and enjoyed great creative freedom during the realisation of the film. It is always very exciting to be invited to think outside the box and wrestle with stimulating ideas.”
The film premiered on August 9th, 2019 at the Locarno Film Festival and we'll keep you updated as to its activity as soon as it's finished the festival circuit.
