As South Africa emerges from lockdown to allow live action shoots once again, supported by its exceptional service community and much-loved variety of locations and studios, London based production company Outsider is thrilled to announce the signing of Cape Town based Karien Cherry for UK commercial representation.

Born in Malawi and raised in Zimbabwe, Karien was a globetrotting theatre performer before time in LA set her heart on becoming a film director. She returned to Africa, went to film school, and has been highly prolific ever since, her ever broadening life experience reflecting in the diversity of her films.

Karien loves working with actors and crafting rich cinematic worlds, no better showcased than in her hilarious recent campaign series for Chicken Licken (through agency Joe Public). Karien is the first female director to shoot for the brand, one of the most lauded in the South African ad industry, and the campaign just scooped Best Direction at the Ciclope Africa awards.

On signing to Outsider, Karien says:

They have such a world class roster that it feels somewhat surreal to be joining their family. I’m honoured, and couldn’t ask for a more reputable shop behind me.

Outsider EP Simon Elborne said “I stumbled across Karien’s work in lockdown and was immediately entertained, captivated and excited. In as much as you can learn about someone in just a few weeks and a hand full of zoom calls it’s abundantly clear already that she’s not only super talented, but also meticulous, decisive and clearly a lot of fun to be around, all the qualities we love in an Outsider. Production is opening up in South African again, and now London’s agencies and brands can access one of the continent’s most exciting directors to shoot for them… what are you waiting for??”
