Picture the scene: it's 2001; mobile phones were used for *gulp* phone calls, the idea of streaming video on the internet was the stuff of sci-fi, shots was entering its teens, sending out Umatic tapes to a desperate ad industry, and BMW quietly invents the idea of branded content.

The concept, named BMW FILMS, was a series of shorts helmed by top-notch directors including Tony Scott, Guy Ritchie, Wong Kar-Wai, Ang Lee, and Alejandro González Iñárritu, that captured the imagination with their mix of canny product-front-and-centre storytelling and Hollywood visuals.

Now, in 2023, the series makes a return with The Calm, an all-action thriller containing high-speed hijinx, car-based kung-fu and a cast including Pom Klementieff, Uma Thurman, and stunt performer Nathaniel Perry. Oh, and one heck of a slick vehicle in the i7 M70.

Helmed by Sam Hargrave through Reset, the film plays on its crew's action pedigree, with a wonderfully choreographed fight scene in the car's back seat managing to deftly showcase the interior's highlights whilst delivering Jackie Chan-esque violent tomfoolery.

Despite the presence of genuine A-listers, it's clear that the car is the star; the whisper-quiet running of the EV used as a motif throughout the film, with the chase notable in its lack of roaring engines and legendary composer Hans Zimmer utilising the stillness in his score.

With the film released during the Cannes Film Festival (who partner on the project) and the tantalizing promise of more to come from the *ahem* 'intriguing' script that leaves room for imaginative interpretation, this heart-pounding revamp of the pioneering campaign is both silent and deadly.
