Created by Media.Monks and TME (The Marcom Engine) in collaboration with Coel, and directed by Aliyah Otchere through Agile Films, the video cleverly dismantles the process of filmmaking, taking the viewer behind the scenes, delving into Coel's script-writing decisions, revisions and rehearsals.
The campaign is inspired by the all-electric BMW i7 and its ultra-wide 32:9 8K Theatre Screen, and promotes the auto brand’s collaboration the BFI (British Film Institute) to help nurture creativity and support innovation in filmmaking.
The Filmmaking Challenge competition will provide five shortlisted filmmakers with a £10,000 production budget and new 8K camera technology, enabling them to experiment with 8K / 32:9 cinematography. From the five shorts, a winning film will be selected to premiere as part of the Closing Night of the BFI London Film Festival taking place in October 2023. All five films will be available on BFI Player.
All five filmmakers will receive mentoring from Michaela Coel. Best known for creating and starring in her award-winning TV shows (Chewing Gum, I May Destroy You), Coel with help develop filmmakers’ visions, from initial discussions around creative influences through to the production itself.
