Director Natasha Mynheir centers Black autism as mental health and developmental disorders continue to be a part of conversations around representation.

As Angela, a tap dancer, struggles to raise her son, she is forwarded an opportunity to try out for the Arthur Duncan tap revue. Despite not wanting to leave Darrel, her son, alone in the house, Darrell recognizes his mother’s passion and encourages her to go ahead. As Angela is trying out for the troupe, disaster strikes (literally), and Darrel is forced to self soothe alone as Angela races back to the house.

Starring Emmy-nominated actress and dancer Chloe Arnold as Angela, the piece also features performances from the legendary tap dancer Arthur Duncan and internet sensations The Syncopated Ladies. The film ends with a touching moment that shows Darrel using his mother’s tap shoe to create a calming rhythm, focusing on the sound and senses he can control. Angela finds him in the bathtub and starts dancing along to the rhythm, connecting with her child in a way that makes both of them feel loved and seen.

Based on a true story, In a Beat is a heartwarming short film that addresses many stereotypes and misconceptions about autistic people. Great Guns backed the production, and the full film can be streamed at either full volume or sensory-friendly levels.
