Aight, California, the time has come for some Tough Love, courtesy of Save Our Water, an org dedicated to water conservation.

Created by The Shipyard, directed by Alice Mathias of Gifted Youth, and edited by Daniel Luna of Union Editorial, the ad stars Danny Trejo and Niecy Nash, who keep popping up (literally) with suggestions (and admonishments) for saving California’s water supply.

Union’s sister company, Hunter, provided Post/Effects (VFX Artists: Maury Rosenfeld, Carolyn Woods, Graphics Artist: Mannix Rickenbacher), and Audio Post (Mixer: Milos Zivkovic).

Trejo first appears in a man’s shower (fully clothed), emitting a warning about water conservation that pulls no punches. He likewise emerges from a washing machine to scold the guy for doing small loads. Of course, Trejo loves showing his softer side, and also appears folding laundry, and even wringing his hair out to water a plant (“Every drop counts!” he notes cheerfully). Turning up in the garden, Nash brings her own inimitable combination of charm and moxy to the proceedings as she helps a couple rethink their landscaping from an eco-conscious point of view. Nash also backs up Trejo, noting that full loads save 45 gallons of water per wash.

“This was a lot of fun,” said Luna, for whom this was the first collaboration with Save Our Water (though Union has worked with the org before). “I’ve known the Shipyard gang for a long time, and it was great to finally work with them all.” Luna described the flow as “pretty fast and furious, for a great cause.”

Trejo’s “iconic presence,” complemented by Nash’s “classy and gentle-but-firm approach” made his job all the more enjoyable. A standout moment: “In the Spanish-language version, where Danny pops out of the washer and asks, ‘Tan poquita ropa??’ (‘a tiny load??’) was especially funny. His combination of edginess and empathy always lands.”
