Established comedy director, Ben Tonge has joined the Dark Energy Films family for representation.

The choice between playing professional cricket and a career in comedy was made all the easier by Tonge not being good enough to bat at number 4 when the pressure was really on.

Having scraped an English literature degree from Goldsmith’s in London, Tonge joined a production company in Manchester and quickly became a terrible production runner. They liked having him around so he was given a last chance as director's assistant. Finally. There seemed to be a fit.

He then took to writing and to stand up comedy and it all clunked and creaked slowly into place.

Tonge’s been ‘One To Watch’ in Creative Review, he’s won an enormous amount of bronze awards at regional advertising awards shows and he’s directed some of his heroes, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, Frank Sidebottom, Ricky Tomlinson and former England captain Michael Vaughan.

A recent spell of work with Paddy Power with the likes of Peter Crouch, Ruby Walsh, Matt LeTissier, Charlie Nicholas, Phil Thompson, Alan Curbishley and Shaun Williamson has garnered upwards of 20M views.

According to Jeff Bezos, all overnight success takes about 10 years. After nearly 18 years, Ben still checks his phone every morning at 6AM to see if his sit-com has finally landed.

Tonge has agreed to disagree with Jeff.

For Line of Duty fans, Tonge’s latest campaign for Paddy Power will have appealed, with the campaign parodying the most talked about TV show this year.

Dark Energy MD Founder, Matt Brown comments; ‘We love Ben’s contagious passion for comedy and all things creative, along with his enthusiasm and work ethic.  He’s a great addition to the roster and we look forward to working with him more.’
