Thousands of people will flock to Brazil this summer for the FIFA World Cup and a popular fast food chain has wasted no time in taking a slice of the action.

Football fans can now take part in matches while they eat at Giraffas restaurants in Brazil after the company launched an innovative smartphone game with agency Mood stemming from research that 90 per cent of customers use their phones while they eat.

The game, titled The Goal Screen, involves turning the paper used on Giraffas food trays into a football pitch and delivers a unique experience for consumers, making mealtime much more fun.

Consumers simply download an app on their smartphone which makes the screen able to recognise the touch of a paper ball when it is flicked across the tray and onto the screen.

To form the ball, footballing foodies need do nothing more than rip off a piece of the paper tray along a perforated line, roll it up and shoot it across the virtual soccer field to their phone – which acts as the goal.

Giraffas wanted to use the World Cup as an opportunity to increase its sales so the new game can only be played in its restaurants as it works exclusively with the chain’s tray paper.

A short video (above) explains how the game works and has already kicked off quite a bit of excitement on YouTube, attracting almost 30,000 viewers so far.
