DDB Chicago’s work for Budweiser and sister brand Bud Light clinched the agency two grand prizes at last night’s London International Advertising Awards.

The wins, presented at a black-tie ceremony held in London, come on the back of Helen Langridge Associates’ announcement last week of a cross-representation deal between Whassup campaign director and copywriter Charles Stone III, colleague Trent Cooper of Storm Brooklyn and the UK production outfit.

Whassup won the TV category of the awards, while the Bud Light Heroes campaign won in radio.

Following the popularity of the Whassup campaign in the UK, Budweiser UK has commissioned sales and promotion company Inferno to produce localised versions of the US campaign in the UK. Over the next five weeks, Inferno will be filming real Bud drinkers Whassuping in 180 venues across 12 cities. The twelve spots will then air on regional TV, and will feature 15 members of the public per spot (see shots.net news November 10).

TBWALONDON creative director Trevor Beattie was chair of the 149 judges for the Awards which are judged solely on creativity, not advertising effectiveness. Beattie withdrew from presenting the prizes at last night’s ceremony, and was in New York during the event. Bob Garfield of Advertising Age and Donna Bernard of ABC News hosted the awards in his absence.

As well as winning the grand prize, American agencies dominated the TV category, scooping 14 of the 33 prizes awarded. No other single country mustered more than five prizes in the medium. The prizes for print were more representative of global advertising with Germany winning seven prizes, equal to those won by Asia’s developing markets. Latin American agencies won five prizes, the UK won four and South Africa two.

Other winners in TV included O&M Argentina’s spot for Type & Magic, Hidden Camera Fun in the low budget category; Springer & Jacoby Hamburg’s Love Affair spot for Mercedez Benz E-class in automotive (pictured); and Leo Burnett Warsaw’s campaign for Balhsen Hit Cookies, Vacuum, filmed through Stink London. Also pictured are award-winning spots by Ogilvy London for Tabasco, Missile, BDDP&FILS work on Manix Condoms, The Fingerprints, and BBDO New York’s spot for FedEx, Action Figures, which won the humour section.

In print, Leo Burnett London won the grand prize for Fishing, a billboard campaign which shows a fishline being reeled in from a rippling pond. Dangling at the end isn’t a fish, but a can of John West tuna. Grey Beijing won China’s first LIAA award for art direction on their campaign for Chu Tian Beer.

Also winners of ‘winged statues’ were Boston-based Arnold Communications who won the grand prize for interactive for Volkswagen US site, www.turbonium.com. London agencies won six out of twenty interactive prizes up for grabs: Deepend for www.viaduct.co.uk (corporate image); Digit Digital Experiences for www.mtv2.co.uk (entertainment); Good Technology for www.smint.com (foods); SAS for www.bt.com/getstarted (money/business); OgilvyInteractive for www.betterthanyouthink.com (recreation equipment) and Impiric for www.stressfree-travel.co.uk (travel).
