SHYNOLA ANSWER PLAGIARISM ACCUSATIONS

23 September 2009

Hot on the heels of plagiarism accusations made by Joe Satriani and Yusef Islam relating to their song Viva La Vida, Coldplay have again had the copy-cat finger pointed their way, this time from singer/songwriter Andy J Gallagher.
As if Black Dog hadn't already garnered enough attention this week with the release of Jonas Akerlund's porno promo for Rammstein, there's more controversy on the cards. On Monday of this week a relatively unknown performer called Andy J Gallagher posted a comment on his website pointing to the similarities between the promo for his song Something Else and the Strawberry Swing video directed by Black Dog's Shynola. The statement in full ran as follows:

"Further to the increasing coverage the 'coldplays video looks an awful lot like andy j gallagher's one,' i would like to add the following. there are similarities between the two videos and we wrote to coldplays management asking them to explain the bizarre coincidences between the videos (both in style and script) and also to qualify chris martins assertion that 'strawberry swings' video is "unique and groundbreaking". surprisingly, they took the time to respond by email with the following: "i'm afraid the creative on the video was written by shynola not coldplay". [Sic]

With debate and chatter mounting online, earning the attention of mainstream news sources around the world, Shynola decided to step in to offer their version of events. In an eight-page statement issued today the creative collective outlined numerous photographic and filmic references, defending their promo and distancing the band from the evolution of the creative concept. The statement ends with the following words from Shynola: "Creativity involves the constant absorption and spitting-out of influences. However, we never copy."

You can read the full statement here and check out both videos below.
