HANGING WITH: CHRISTIAN BEVILAQUA

17 June 2009

shots delves inside the mind of the Therapy director and talks isometric cameras, iPhone apps and Nazi zombies.
What have you been working on recently?
Literally just finished a viral piece for LG phones for the UK and also completed a fairly big spot for MasterCard over in the states. Both are live-action with fairly heavy post effects sprinkled on top.
I shot a spot for LG last year with BBH in Hong Kong and this viral is a spin off from that commercial. It's been a fun little number to work on.

MasterCard was shot in New York and had only two weeks post on it. I was involved in helping with the animation as well, so there was a fair bit of late night action going on to get it delivered on its crazy tight schedule, but we did good and finished at a reasonable time on the last day.

Oh and I did a spot for Amnesty called Defy Them. That was with Alex [Holder] and Oli [Beale] over at WCRS. Kudos for getting me involved on that one. I like doing charity spots, they cleanse the soul.

2009 is nearly half-way done - what do you hope to achieve by the end of the year?
Have a little holiday and then get a few more good jobs in the bag. Things seem to get busy after Cannes, so am guessing it'll sort of be the same this year, even with a recession.

In downtime, I was hoping to begin work on a true isometric camera, there's been a few ideas floating around on how to try and achieve it. It's a camera that effectively gets rid of perspective or at least close to it so reality ends up looking like the old arcade game Q-Bert or like the painting Van Gogh did of his bedroom. Everything goes a weird super flat 2D, well in theory anyway...

Also, I've signed up to be an iPhone app developer and have got hold of a couple of apps for game creation on a PC. I doubt I'm going to make any games this year but want to better understand the process. Commercials and films are now getting closer to merging with gaming to become one medium. I am trying to learn about game production and stay as informed as possible.

I have a few programmer friends around so I might try and put together a zombie game test or something for a laugh.

What have you been watching or listening to lately that you reckon shots readers should check out?

On the watching front, I just went to a private viewing of Malcom Venville's first film 44 Inch Chest which was really well done. He's done a great job of his first film. Keep your eye out for that coming out later in the year.

On the listening front, I am not a massive fan of hip-hop but I've recently been listening to MF Doom's new album, Born Like This, a lot. What can I say other than it's great?

And I guess - if it's a rainy summers day you might wanna have a look at my website??

What's been getting you angry recently?
Not much really. I think am calming down in my old age. I used to be a very stressed person when I was younger... but not these days. Am not far off strolling around the house in a smoking jacket with a glass of whiskey and a cigar on weekends... I think the wife might slap me around if I did that though.

What was the last thing you read?
I've been reading up on and getting my head around achieving something called 'anamorphic perspective' which is essentially a clever visual illusion and an alternative to the classic 'linear perspective'. It's a nifty way to see images from the real world to the 2D world but with a weird 3D quality to it. Google The Ambassadors by Hans Holbein if you want to bend your head for a bit.

I've also started reading Einstein's Dreams, which is a valiant attempt at explaining the concept of time/relativity in as simple a way possible. It toys with time as if trying to teach you it like a child. Naturally, it's still a head bender.

If you had all the equipment in the world and an infinite budget what would be your ideal film project?
Hmm… Probably a zombie film, but, to put a spin on it, it'll be Nazi zombies invading Britain in 1942. Could make a good film.

What have you been up to since you were last in shots?
Working non-stop. I didn't have a holiday last year so am planning on having one next month...I was shooting a lot last year so it kept me out of trouble.

I will always use post houses for some jobs, but some of my projects are just way too heavy effects wise to put through some companies unless your budget is touching the sky.

Last year I was helping set up the post production arm to Therapy Films... known currently as the 'Batcave' but am sure this title will evolve. It's been a nice little challenge to get up and running as a benefactor to my directing career. Now it's nice and active like a little bee-hive. Naturally we can make the budgets go further on the heavily effect driven spots and I feel a lot more in control.
Of late the news has been pretty doom-laden - recession, corruption, environmental melt down. Is it getting to you? Or are you managing to block it out? Are you pretty political or do you prefer to think about other things?
The recession doesn't bother me massively as it's not touched me directly. In fact I don't think I've ever been busier, but that might have something to do with my best new director award from cfp-e/shots last summer.

Don't get me wrong - it doesn't mean I don't see it. I am very aware that a lot of people in commercials are having a horrible time with it. I've been reading up on advertising bouncing back at the end of the year...let's hope that's an accurate prediction.
