MOTHER STICKS THE BOOT IN

11 June 2008

Sticker albums are as much of our hazy memories of childhood as filling jam jars with frogspawn and using jumpers for goalposts. So it's hardly surprising that when England failed to get into Euro 2008, football fans turned to the old faithful sticker album and comfort blanket to get them through the tough times.

Losers 2008 is the unofficial sticker album for Engerland supporters during the Euro 2008 tournament in Austria and Switzerland. It features England footballers and the activities they'll be getting up to this summer while the more competent of Europe's footballers get on with the tournament. DIY, shopping (with WAG), walking the dog, and angling - it's going to be a busy couple of months for some of Britain's highest paid men.

The cover sports the legend "featuring all of our underachieving Millionaire Footballers" - you get the feeling that the creatives at Mother want to get something off their chest. "It's the frustration the nation feels at us not getting into the Euros," explains Ben Middleton, who co-created the album.

They've taken care with their research to make sure the book hits the spot. The DIY chapter, for example, was inspired by Alan Shearer, who celebrated Blackburn Rovers winning the Premier League in 1995 by painting his garden fence. And with about 130 stickers featuring 130 footballers a lot of work went into ensuring that each one was funny and had a ring of truth about it.

And that's not the only research that was involved. "We've been trawling through our old Panini books, seeing what info they have, what we can appropriate and make funny," says Middleton. So expect lots of stats and facts.

The idea first came about when Middleton and colleague Stuart Outhwaite were working on another brief at the point England had failed to qualify for the tournament. They wanted to do something to poke fun at the England players and the concept of a sticker album came quite quickly.

The end result is a 32-page album that will be distributed throughout post houses, sound studios, edit houses and newsagents across London at the end of the week. Packs of stickers will be available on receptions. And now that we're all a bit too old to hang around in school playgrounds, anyone who needs swapsies can hook up with other collectors on the website.
